Leading Link is on the lookout for young volunteers and adult mentors to help make a real difference to the lives of young people in the Northumberland area.
Leading Link’s aim is to maximise the potential of young people and through various successful programmes and courses over the past seven years this aim has been achieved.
Previous work however has been mainly in the south east of the county but more work is needed further out into Northumberland as manager, Lyn Horton explains:
“Our young volunteers are known as Youth Ambassadors and they have worked tirelessly in the local community with both the old and young and everyone in between. Amazingly they have amassed 1000’s of volunteer hours over the last seven years.
“We are now working with young people further afield and covering areas around Hadston,
Lynemouth, Linton, Red Row, Amble, and Widdrington. We’re now looking for volunteer adult mentors who know these areas to enable us to support young people with access provision and services.”
One of the key successes of the adult volunteers is the ‘Mentoring Project ‘which has been piloting at Leading Link over the last year. This project has seen volunteers providing a listening ear to local youngsters who for various reasons have needed extra support. These young people have found having someone to talk to has had an amazing impact on their lives and they have reported that its made a real difference to them.
The young volunteers and mentors recently enjoyed a day out at Cragside in Rothbury which gave everyone the chance to get to know each other and share their ideas and experiences.
Adult mentors and youth ambassadors will get regular training and enjoy social activities together. Anyone who is interested in the schemes and are prepared to give up a few hours of their time each month to make such a difference to their local community can contact Leading Link on 01670820088.
